Welcome to the Gardner A. Sage Library of New Brunswick Theological Seminary. Often referred to as the “jewel of the campus,” the Sage Library is the physical and digital hub for theological research in the New Brunswick, NJ area.

Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright Policy:

Sage Library complies with The Copyright Act 17 U.S.C.A. § 101 et seq., which covers the usage of copyrighted materials for educational purposes.

Fair Use Statement:

Fair use is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. 17 U.S.C. §107 provides the statutory framework for determining whether something is a fair use and identifies certain types of uses—such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research—as examples of activities that may qualify as fair use.

Scan & Send Electronic Document Delivery

Scan & Send is for current NBTS students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this service is to provide electronically delivered scans of small portions of Sage’s general collections for private study, research, teaching, or scholarship. Any other use may require the permission of the copyright owner.   

A small portion of the work: a) sometimes a small portion may constitute a chapter or article and b) Tables of Contents, endnotes, and related supplementary content (endnotes, tables, etc.) will routinely be included.

It is the responsibility of the requesting patron to comply with all applicable Copyright laws and Fair Use guidelines. 

Terms of Service:  

  • Limitations on Scan & Send service are related to the capacity of available staff resources. 
  • Library staff reserve the right to process one request per person per day, depending on staffing and overall request volume. 
  • Citations must be for items available in the eligible print collections: LC Stacks, Pettee Stacks, Periodicals, Course Reserves, and Reference. 
  • Requests encompassing entire works will be cancelled, regardless of length. 
  • Requests for unavailable, ineligible, missing, fragile, or tightly bound items may be forwarded to Interlibrary Loan (ILL) on your behalf. 
  • If requests are otherwise not in the spirit of Terms of Service, library staff will contact you by email to resolve. 

Turnaround service time for Scan & Send is 3 days (excluding holidays). 

To place requests using the Scan & Send Service use the Scan & Send Request Form (you will need to be logged into your Office 365 account to complete the form)

Printing and Scanning

The use of printers and scanners at Sage Library is free of charge.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan enables eligible New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS) affiliates to borrow material from other libraries or obtain copies of articles or book chapters from titles that are not owned by Sage Library or available through our databases.

Sage Library also lends materials to patrons of other libraries through Interlibrary Loan and other reciprocal lending arrangements.

Eligibility for ILL Services

Students, faculty, and staff of NBTS with borrowing privileges in good standing are eligible to use Interlibrary Loan services.

Alumnae/i, NYATLA, RCA and Local clergy, Rutgers, SEPTLA, Visiting Fellows and Researches, and members of the public with borrowing privileges are not eligible to use Interlibrary Loan services. Please check with your home institution or local public library to access Interlibrary Loan. 


How to Place ILL Requests

Current NBTS DMin and Master's students, faculty, and staff may place ILL requests through the DTL.

Current Certificate Program students may place ILL requests by using this form.

WiFi is available within the library. Access the network by using the NBTS student network. Then enter the password, which is normally your NBTS student ID number preceded by a 0.

Guest logins are available at the Circulation Desk.

Mail Out Services

Current NBTS alumnae/i, faculty, staff, and students who live at a distance, with accounts in good standing, are eligible for using Sage Library's Mail Out Service for items in our General Print Collection. To request an item to be mailed to you, please complete this form.

Note : Sage Library will cover the cost of mailing items to users. All return shipping fees are paid for by the borrower.
